514: Shanghai Blues

I truly have to apologize for my short term memory. I honestly honestly cannot recall who got me this fridge magnet. So I am going to put both names here. I am going to give credit to both coz they do contribute to my collection. This one is from China.

(Hafiz will associate Shanghai with either Transformers 2 or Willie from Indiana Jones' movies)

Sayang Anak Emak

They are one of the cutest animal in the world. And one of the deadliest. I saw a show on Ntional Geographic recently on bears who lived in captivity. They are not able to go back to where they should be living as they are too fragile to be allowed. Quite sad.

One World One Dream

I wanted the Olympic Fuwa so badly, I was about to buy them online. And then Izwan was given an assignment to Hong Kong and he told me to wait as he'll try to find it there. After all, Hong Kong IS part of China.

And he found it! Yes! Yes! Yes! Original mechandise. See the box? Packaging is really cool.

Most Beautiful Stadium

For magnet number 222, it is one special magnet of a gorgeous and wonderfully constructed stadium in China which hosts the recent Olympics.

Beijing National Stadium stadium in Beijing, China. The stadium was designed for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

Located in the Olympic Green, the US$423 million stadium is the world's largest steel structure. The design was awarded to a submission from the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in April 2003, after a bidding process that included 13 final submissions. The design, which originated from the study of Chinese ceramics, implemented steel beams in order to hide supports for the retractable roof; giving the stadium the appearance of a "Bird's nest". Ai Weiwei, the artistic consultant, played a critical role in pushing the design to have unique Chinese characteristics.

Ironically, the retractable roof was later removed from the design after inspiring the stadium's most recognizable aspect. Ground was broken in December 2003 and the stadium officially opened in June 2008. A shopping mall and a hotel are planned to be constructed to increase use of the stadium, which will host football events after the Olympics.

Ying Ying The Fuwa

Izwan's office mate Rozana went to China earlier this year. I think it has something to do with the upcoming Olympics. And Rozana got us (me?) a Beijing 2008 magnet! Sukanya kita!! I wonder if they sell the entire collection of magnets online. I'd like to have one set.

They have five mascots - I read on a website that like the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their color and inspiration, Fuwa (the mascots) will serve as the Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace -- and good wishes from China -- to children all over the world.

Designed to express the playful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, Fuwa also embody the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals -- the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow -- and the Olympic Flame. Each of Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name -- a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow.

Rozana bought Ying Ying for us. Here she is:
