Orang Sarawak

Here are the fridge magnets of a Bidayuh couple and an Orang Ulu couple. I bought them in Bintulu last month. They's so cute, they are placed next to the Korean couples on my fridge at home. Here are the Bidayuhs:

The Bidayuh is a name of a tribe on Borneo island. They are a subgroup of the Borneo Dayak tribe. Bidayuhs originally came from the western part of Borneo. They were called Land Dayaks by the British who colonised the part of Borneo called Sarawak which is now a state in Malaysia. They are one of the main indigenous ethnic groups in Sarawak and now are settled in the northwestern part of Borneo, or southwestern Sarawak, around Kuching and Samarahan in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Bidayuhs are also found in west Kalimantan. They are the second largest Dayak ethnic group in Sarawak after the Iban tribe (Iban)].

And here are the Orang Ulu:

Orang Ulu ("remote people") is an ethnic designation politically coined to group together roughly 27 very small but ethnically diverse tribal groups in Sarawak, with a population ranging from less than 300 persons to over 25,000 persons. The Orang Ulu typically live in longhouses elaborately decorated with murals and woodcarvings. They are also well-known for their intricate beadwork detailed tattoos. The Orang Ulu tribes can also be identified by their unique music - distinctive sounds from their sape', a plucked boat-shaped lute, formerly with two strings, nowadays usually with four strings. I have written about sape before, click here.

Gifts From Melbourne

Ar. Yusof went to Melbourne with his son to visit his daughter. And he bought tons of fridge magnets for us. I was so excited that I went to take my camera. Then we divided amongst ourslves: me, Sharifah & Yati - of course I was the greediest - with most numbers, which my dear friends allowed, since I am the one who collects this stuff. Sharifah has also started her own collection, she was influenced by me. Out of the lot, these are the ones that I brought home: Oh, by the way, I have marked the number #100 in my collection. We're still counting. I am very thankful that I have friends who supports this hobby of mine.

Fire of Firenze

This gorgoues magnet was purchased by Onnair - in Italy, of course. It is the italian word for Florence, the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany, Italy. Yes, they are not mere names of perfumes, you know.

Among its famous residents are Donatello the scupltor, Raphael the painter, Leornado Da Vinci (if you have never heard of him, where have you been?) and of course Salvatore Ferragamo.
